Samantha Austin

Hey, I'm Samantha Elaine Austin — a technical content writer at MailExel with 10+ years in the email space. I write about email client backups, mailbox migration, and email management — the kind of stuff that goes wrong at the worst possible moment. My background in deliverability and email infrastructure means I've seen what breaks, why it breaks, and how to fix it without losing a single message.

About Samantha Austin

Who I Am

Hi, I'm Samantha. I'm a technical writer at MailExel, and I've spent the last ten years watching email break in creative ways — and then figuring out how to fix it.

I didn't plan to become the person who writes about email backup and migration. It just sort of happened. I started in QA, testing how emails looked in Outlook (spoiler: usually bad), and somewhere along the way, I realized I cared more about what happens when email fails than I did about most things. Now I write about it full-time.

What I Actually Do

I write guides about three things: backing up your email so you don't lose it, moving your email from one place to another without everything exploding, and actually managing your inbox in a way that doesn't make you want to delete your entire life.

It sounds boring. I get it. But every guide I write is because someone out there had a problem that felt unsolvable at 3 p.m. on a Tuesday. I try to be that person who explains what happened and how to not let it happen again.

How I Got Here

2014–2016: I was a QA engineer at SendBlaze testing email rendering. Outlook 2007 gave me trust issues that I'm still working through.

2016–2018: At Pylon, I analyzed why emails disappeared into the digital void. Started writing explanations for people who weren't engineers, and someone told me I was actually good at it.

2018–2020: Worked at an SEO agency and learned how to write about technical stuff without sounding like I swallowed a manual. This is where my voice actually became mine.

2020–2023: At NetReach, I owned content about email infrastructure. Got nerdy about DNS, SMTP, and email protocols. Gave a talk at Litmus Live that maybe twelve people attended, but those twelve people really got it.

2023–Now: MailExel. Finally writing about email backup, migration, and management — the stuff that keeps me up at night because it matters.

Why You Should Trust What I Write

  • I've lived this. I've recovered from failed migrations, rebuilt corrupted files, and stared at delivery reports at midnight. I write about what actually happens, not what's supposed to happen.
  • I explain things clearly. Email is technical. I get that. But I refuse to hide behind jargon. You'll understand what I'm saying, even if you've never heard of IMAP before.
  • I'm honest about mess. There's no perfect email backup or migration strategy. I tell you what works, what doesn't, and what you're trading off.
  • I actually care. Your email is important. When it breaks, it's a real problem. I write like it matters, because it does.

Off the Clock

I live in Raleigh with my partner and a greyhound named Bandwidth (yes, I named my dog after a network term). I run in the mornings, make cold brew at home because coffee shops can't keep up with my consumption, and play bass in a band that actually plays shows sometimes.

I'm in the EmailGeeks Slack, I talk email infrastructure with actual engineers, and I write a personal Substack where I get way too excited about DMARC records.

The Truth

Email isn't glamorous. Nobody wakes up excited to think about PST files or mailbox migrations. But email is the backbone of how millions of people work. It's where your job lives, where your accounts are secured, where your memories are archived.

When email breaks, everything else breaks with it. So I write about it — clearly, honestly, and hopefully in a way that actually helps you fix it.
